Getting the ol’ act together. Rain knocking the leaves down onto the sidewalk. Halloween pajamas. Brainstorming the sequel to Liar’s Beach. Trips to the library every week. Meg Conley’s homeculture newsletter. The baby trying hard to roll over. A very creepy version of Darlin’ Clementine on repeat. The two-year-old marching off to school in pigtails and sneakers. Iced coffee with almond milk. A trip to see some old friends. White chicken chili in the crockpot. Only Murders in the Building. First pass pages for Birds of California. 30,000 words of something new.

A long exhale. Catching up, finally. Taking a breath. Finishing up projects. Listening to mysteries on audiobook. Finishing my West Wing rewatch and immediately just starting over again. The baby looking at books on the couch with her ankles crossed, like possibly she’s thirteen years of age. A two hour nap. Writing a short story. Making a lot of soup. New pajamas. Bracing for the winter. Donating to Fair Fight. Avon under a blanket. Candles that smell like Christmas tree farms. The light through the yellow leaves in the mornings.

Wearing a mask. Still staying home, mostly. Garden filling in. The baby saying “kiss”. Some time in the pool, finally. A lot of recreational real-estate browsing. Writing the ole electeds. Smitten Kitchen baked chickpeas. Learning about police abolition. An at-home goal-setting retreat. Writing a romcom. Burgers and sweet potato fries. Sing, Unburied, Sing. A Mad Men rewatch. Making pesto. Fireworks, every night. WQXR. Some fun virtual events. Shopping Black-owned businesses. Planning for the future. Remembering to say thank you for what we’ve got.

Cabin fever. The baby learning to crawl. New sandals and the Instagram bathing suit. Finding a volunteer gig, I think. Cheer, which I loved so much. That time of year when I’m a little sick of all my music. Refining my taste in picture books.Booking tour dates (!). Not being tired of soup yet, thank goodness. Hosting dinners. A weekend away. Switching back to a bullet journal and immediately exhaling. Booking a massage. Waiting for news. Recalibrating for the rest of the winter. Trying not to complain about the weather. Trying not to wish away the here and now.

Girl Scout cookie time (did you know you can order Girl Scout cookies online now, BECAUSE YOU CAN, not everything about living in the future is terrible). Trying so, so hard to scroll less. Starting up the ol’ book promo machine. The Women Are Here podcast. Looking for a new show. A lot of back and forth to New York. The baby sitting up, eating solids, smiling to break my heart. Making complicated recipes. Making rice + beans with a crispy egg. Reading two books at once. Clacking away at a ghostwriting project. Working out some body image garbage. Feeling bored, but not surprised, by everything about awards season. Avon in her winter headquarters, parked in front of the heating vent. Listening to Broadway soundtracks in the afternoons. Still extremely tired and wondering if that’s just how it is now? Waiting on my Amaryllis. Getting the paper again. A few really beautiful days.

Cover Reveal: YOU SAY IT FIRST

Katie

October 2, 2019

First things first: HELLO I am alive! I had a baby girl this summer and she’s great and we’re all very tired and happy, how are you???

Second things second: I have TWO BOOKS out in 2020 and I am very excited about both of them and I get to show you the cover of one of them today!

Like, right now!

Here’s the scoop:

Meg has her entire life set up perfectly: her boyfriend Mason is sweet and supportive, she and her best friend Emily plan to head to Cornell together in the fall, and she even finds time to clock shifts phonebanking at a voter registration call center in her Philadelphia suburb. But everything changes when one of those calls connects her to a stranger from small-town Ohio, who gets under her skin from the moment he picks up the phone.

Colby is stuck in a rut, reeling from a family tragedy and working a dead-end job—unsure what his future holds, or if he even cares. The last thing he has time for is some privileged rich girl preaching the sanctity of the political process. So he says the worst thing he can think of and hangs up.

But things don’t end there.…

That night on the phone winds up being the first in a series of candid, sometimes heated, always surprising conversations that lead to a long-distance friendship and then—slowly—to something more. Across state lines and phone lines, Meg and Colby form a once-in-a-lifetime connection. But in the end, are they just too different to make it work?

You Say It First is a propulsive, layered novel about how sometimes the person who has the least in common with us can be the one who changes us most.

YOU GUYS, HOW GOOD IS THIS COVER? I am DEEPLY indebted to Jessie Gang, Alison Donaly, and Ana Hard for all their gorgeous work on this cover, and I cannot wait to share the book with you all. It’s a good one, I promise. More soon. xox

Wrapping up some work stuff. Finishing the nursery. Normal People. Making spreadsheets. Washing tiny clothes. Taking long walks with Avon. Becoming. Long weekends in Vermont. Lurking around the library. Hanging out on the deck. Watching my snap peas come in. This house being mostly renovated, I think, after four years of working on it? Buying a lot of wicker baskets, frankly. Killing Eve. Spotify’s Coffee Table Jazz playlist. Blasts from the past. Thinking about the future.
