Five Good Things: Mocha Frappuccino Edition

Katie

March 12, 2010

1. It has been freakishly warm here. I know that makes Al Gore really upset, and it makes me really upset too in theory, but I can tell you that I did not feel upset at all this morning when I left the house in an unbuttoned jacket and bought an iced coffee at the weird shady variety store by the bus stop. I did not feel upset at ALL.

2. Media I have been absolutely loving this week: Romancing the Stone, the first season of The Wire, Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen, Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie, Carrie Underwood Pandora, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe by Vincent Van Gogh (ALSO, did you know there is a theory among scholars that Paul Gauguin is actually the one who cut Van Gogh’s ear off? And Vince had acted like a jerk that day or something, so he was all, “Uh, yeah, I did it myself”?), and the new episode of Lost (which made me cry twice because I am a sucker for cyclical storytelling and also slow motion montages).

3. Late-night trips to Target and economy-sized boxes of Cheerios, plus a Starbucks to hold while you wander around.

4. Did I tell you that I made Deb’s Banana Bread before I left on vacation? And that it was AMAZING but I only ate one crumb of it because the whole point of making it was to get all the food out of my house because I didn’t want it to go bad while I was away? Anyway, I am totally making it again tonight as part of my “Hell yeah I am a hermit, I do what I WANT” Friday Night In. Also on the docket: beet and goat cheese salad, and a nap on the couch.

5. There are two brunches and a night on the town with the book clubbers in my immediate future. I anticipate a bitchin’ time.

Word. Happy Friday.

UM, have you seen this?

I think it officially replaces “Little Kids do The Jersey Shore” as my favorite YouTube video of all time.

Back. Burned. Bitten. Happy. Had a bang up time. Pictures to come, obviously. But first: sleep.

Five Good Things: Mexican Wedding Edition

Katie

March 5, 2010

oo1. Ryan and Aoife get married today! Ryan was one of my roommates when I was Wendy and lived with three boys; he is tall and hilarious and has more sneakers than anyone I’ve ever met in my entire life. Aoife is joy personified; she is badass and played rugby in Ireland and remembers everyone’s name. Congratulations, Merrys. I am so happy to know you both.

oo2. Stories that lurk around in the primordial ooze inside my brain for months until they finally bubble up to the surface. Am writing, this week. My marker is moving, here, sitting on the beach.

003. Plans: for knitting, for running, for business, for travel, for writing, for change. Something about this beach is good for the imagination.

004. Probably, when you read this, I’ll be drinking a margarita in a lounge chair.

005. You tell me today, chickens. Would so love a collection of good things to come home to.

I forget which one of you lovely ladies out in blogland suggested cooking something ahead of time to throw in the freezer for the night you get back from vacation, but whoever you are: you are a genius. I can’t tell you how many sub-par pizzas I’ve scarfed in a post-airplane food panic.

This baked ziti took maybe ten minutes to put together last weekend while I caught up on a little Benson/Stabler drama on SVU, but I am already excited to dig in when we roll back into Boston on Monday. Plus remembering to do it made me feel more organizationally badass than Martha herself.

Have iPod, SPF, My Life in France, journal, sunglasses, Dreams From my Father, snacks, flipflops, Foreign Affairs. Have boyfriend. Have dress. Have wedding to attend. Be back Monday with photos.

Meanwhile, stick around. There’s some stuff lined up around these parts.

Recipe: Book Club Key Lime Pie

March 2, 2010

Gakked from Deb, though I switched in a graham cracker crust and added a coconut topping to cover up the weird-looking parts. This was delicious, if I do say so myself, although even with a serious amount of refrigeration it was pretty runny and sticky when I cut it up. Anybody out there know how to keep pies pretty, even in the serving?

Abbey made coconut ice cream. Mari made margaritas. Lisa and Christy made the best fajitas of my whole life. Ladies, you continue to bowl me over with your general awesomeness. See you in a month.

Totally on the list of things I am going to eat when I get back from Mexico:

IT’S GROSS I KNOW. I’M SORRY. I have officially turned into the trashiest of trashy New Englanders; somewhere out there my mother is shaking her head in disgust and saying, “Oh, Kate. I raised you better than that.”

True story: the picture is so small because I was worried if I uploaded the big one you’d never come back to this blog again.
