Sister Eugene, Wherever You Are, I Owe You an Apology

Katie

April 14, 2009

To be cross-filed under “Things the Nuns Said That Were Actually True” and “Things I Did Not Believe Five Years Ago”:

It does make you look skanky, and fatter than you actually are, if you roll your uniform skirt up three times before you leave the house.

It’s funny to ride the public bus at three in the afternoon. You run into a whole different cross-section of the neighborhood.

Flower District

Thanks to a run of good luck (and a goof-up at 1800Flowers), there are currently three (three!) different bouquets in my apartment.

Wild Things

Katie

April 13, 2009

I was going to talk about food today, but whatever. I’m making orange-soy glazed chicken and the last three-bean chili of the season. Or maybe we’ll just eat yesterday’s leftovers all week. You know how it is.

Instead, I want you to watch this trailer, because it made me so happy, and I bet it will make you happy, too.

Happy Monday.

Godspell

Katie

April 13, 2009

“And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men. Then the angel said to the women in reply, ‘Do not be afraid. I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.'”

These days I am the most lapsed of Catholics, but I always kind of liked this one.

I hope you all had a gorgeous Easter.

Five Good Things: Easter Bonnet Edition

Katie

April 11, 2009

dscn1531

1. The smell of freshly ground beans in the coffeemaker

2. Being done with five of a series of six short stories–and considering a bonus seventh

3. An Easter brunch tomorrow, complete with Barefoot Contessa fritatta and a French toast casserole

4. Condo suddenly having found a new lease on life and swimming all over his tank in aquatic bliss

5. When Tom comes in from work late at night and says, before anything else, “It’s only me, Kate.”

Happy Holiday, gang.

Skinny Cow

Katie

April 9, 2009

Dessert of the week: a chopped banana, a handful of strawberries, some plain nonfat yogurt, and a sprinkle of Splenda.

Probably it’s better with a drizzle of chocolate syrup (or a giant scoop of chocolate ice cream), but I’m trying to eat less crap.

This concoction is the perfect accompaniment to an evening of Idol results.

Good riddance, Scott McIntyre.

Hello, little summer clothes.

Icy Blue Heart: Winter 2009, Part One

Katie

April 8, 2009

It’s officially spring in New England–no matter what the calendar says, it doesn’t count until I can run out for coffee in flip flops, and the buds start to burst out on all the trees.  Before I dive head-first into it, though–and dive I certainly will–I wanted to take a second to remember some of the important moments from this winter. Here a few of my favorite photos from the last few months:

Bibbity Bobbity Boo

Katie

April 7, 2009

I had two prom dresses. They were sort of wonderful, really, very prom-y, all satin and tulle and matching shoes with rhinestones. They were Jessica McClintock. It was all very glam.

That was in 2003. Since then, one of the dresses (the red one with the embroidery) was lost forever, lent to a friend of a friend of my sister’s who either disappeared off the face of the earth or just stopped being friends with my sister’s friend, same difference. The other one has been sitting in my closet, gathering dust. I wore it once more, to a Hall Council formal in college, but it looked frankly absurd. Plus, I’m fatter than I used to be. Not a lot. But a little.

Anyway, the point is, when I went home last week I pulled it out and was trying to figure out what to do with it, when I remembered hearing about the Fairy Godmother Project, which provides gently-used dresses (and matching shoes, I imagine) to chicks who need them for their own proms and formals. Is that not the awesomest, nicest, most pay-it-forwardest thing you’ve ever heard?

I brought the dress back to the apartment, and later today I’m going to haul the giant thing on the train to the Boston Public Library and do some donatin’. I love the idea of getting it out of my house–and into someone else’s prom pictures.

Peach Schnapps and girlfights not included.

Five Good Things: Spring Fever Edition

Katie

1. Catching up with my college roommate. We might not have been the best of friends when we lived together, but boy howdy does that girl get me. It’s nice.

2. Tom hanging up approximately one million pictures around this apartment this afternoon, PLUS he made me an egg sandwich even though I crabbed at him. My boyfriend is cool.

3. Having written thirty pages in the last two weeks, with about twenty more on the horizon. I’m not prolific. I don’t know what’s happening to me.

4. A nap on a Saturday

5. A new/old spring scarf, courtesy of my mom. It’s so good to be rid of the wool and flannel around here. Smells like April.
