Fiesta

On Sunday night Abbey and Meg came over for a Mexican-style cookout. I grilled up some burgers and topped them with pepperjack cheese, some leftover three-bean and veggie chili, plus a couple of slices of avocado. THEY WERE VERY TASTY.

Abbey had an awesome recipe for Mexican street corn, which is what you are admiring in that picture up there. All you do is throw the corn on the grill, and once it’s done you slather it with a mixture of mayo, chili powder, garlic salt, and pepper. Then you squirt the whole business with a lime. So good. I kept the leftovers to dip chips in.

Also, there was Chex Mix and also brownies a’la mode. Neither of which are Mexican. Both of which are pretty darn good.

Stuff White People Like

On Saturday we went to see Dave Matthews Band in Hartford, like the nice suburban children we are.

We go every year. Well, except the year I was working retail and was too poor.

But mostly it’s our summer tradition.

IMG_0167

I love Dave.

I’ve loved him since I was fifteen and the boy I liked (oops, not Tom) told me I should.

I was a lemming.

But it worked out okay.

I told Marissa that in the movie of my life, Dave will play the eccentric spiritual advisor.

He always seems to be saying, “Calm down, little girl. I’ll play you a song.”

(Actually probably what he is saying is, “I need more drugs to bake my brain,” but we all have our foibles).

I think everybody should have a Dave.

Also, I think everyone should go to a concert and sing their lungs out.

It’s good for your heart.

It’s good for mine, at least.

Tell me who you’re seeing this summer.

Southie Brunch

H and J came over yesterday for brunch on the roof deck. On the menu:

IMG_0173

My favorite brunch fallback: an Ina frittata with broccoli, sausage, and cheese

IMG_0175

Cinnamon-raisin muffins (recipe to come! I MADE IT UP!) and a big bowl of fruit. Plus lots of iced coffee, obvs. We don’t do anything in this house without a lot of iced coffee.

Frankie was suitably impressed.

Five Good Things: Sunday Morning Edition

Katie

June 7, 2009

IMG_0165

1. Brunch with good friends two mornings in a row

2.  Opening the door and picking up the paper every Sunday, Tony Soprano-style

3. That last night on the way home from our road trip (more on this later) I had a Quarter Pounder with cheese, and while it made me feel really, truly, incredibly gross afterward, it was totally worth it

4. Sudafed Allergy Sinus (I wasn’t kidding about the non-drug remedies, you guys, but you haven’t come through!)

5. It’s summertime. It really, really is.

In which I talk about food

Sometimes I like to put goldfish in my salads. Also in here: chicken, raisins, feta, and a homemade vinaigrette.

I know I already found the world’s best sammich, but this is a close second: turkey, cheddar, tomato, avocado, and greens on whole-wheat sourdough. Yum.

Thursday dinner: Italian sausage and all kinds of grilled veg.

Oh man I like eating.

2. How can I get rid of my miserable sinus pressure besides taking medicine that makes me BANANAS?

3. Why hasn’t Shane West made any movies that are good?

On Sunday night I had a fall (we won’t talk about how it happened).

This isn’t unusual (Great Subway Stairs Tumble of 2008, anyone?).

But I landed on my tailbone (actually, I landed on my ASS).

Hard (really hard).

The result?

I can’t sit (or stand).

Run (or walk).

Lay down (back or stomach).

Climb stairs (or bend over).

Or especially, ESPECIALLY sneeze or cough (unfortunate, since it’s allergy season).

Without  some serious pain

(in the butt).

Taking the night off to watch some teevee. Send me love.

Hey Mister DJ

Katie

Inspired by cool kids:

Summer Love: The Harlem Line LP

(aka Katie’s Triple X-tra Fabulous Road Trip Mix, Summer oh-nine edition)

Disloyal Order of the Water Buffaloes: Fallout Boy

Youse a Hoe: Ludacris

Knock You Down: Keri Hilson with Kanye and Ne-Yo

Only You: Joshua Radin

Got Money: T-Pain

Where the Party At: Nelly with Jagged Edge

We Ride: Rihanna

Streetlight Halos: Jeffrey Foucault

Black or White: Michael Jackson

Shake Ya Tailfeater: Murphy Lee with Nelly and P-Diddy

Cry me a River (remix): Justin Timberlake with 50-Cent

Get Here: Justin Guarini

Use Somebody: Kings of Leon

Welcome to Heartbreak: Kanye West with Kid Cudi

Proudest Monkey: Dave Matthews Band

Don’t Stop Believin’: the Cast of Glee

Looking at this list, it occurs to me that if you didn’t know me, you might think I was a little, uh, harder to the streets than I actually am. But sometimes you just need a serious bassline, okay? Especially in the summertime, and especially out on the road.
